DUCTILE IRON is often known as:
- Spheroidal
Graphite Iro
- SG Iron
- Nodular Iron
|
|
Grey
Iron is the most traditional Iron but has limitations in use
where the speed and weight of modern
traffic imposes great
demands in terms of product strength,
impact resistance and
durability.
Ductile
Iron has all the traditional qualities
associated
with Grey Iron and is chemically
almost identical.
However
by treating the Iron with magnesium the
inherent weak nature of the flake
graphite structure
is converted to a strong spheroidal
graphite structure
otherwise known as Ductile Iron.
The
obvious advantages in specifying and
using Ductile
Iron
Covers and Gratings are:
- Greater strength
- Higher impact resistance
- Better durability
The
less obvious advantages include:
- Lighter castings for ease of installation
- Better utilisation of transportation
- Reduced
injury risk in handling
- Less breakage in loading
and unloading
- Economic use of resources
and raw materials.

- Flake Graphite Iron
- Flake Iron
- Cast Iron
